AGOA Extension to 2028 a Boost to Kenyan Businesses

AGOA Extension to 2028 a Boost to Kenyan Businesses

The extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) through December 31, 2028, is good news for Kenyan businesses, as it secures continued preferential access to the United States market.
Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui welcomed the extension, saying it provides much-needed certainty for Kenyan exporters, manufacturers and investors.
“This is a significant development for Kenya and provides much-needed certainty for exporters, manufacturers and investors who rely on preferential access to the United States market,” said CS Kinyanjui.
He noted that the extension is particularly important for Kenya’s textile and apparel industry, which supports more than 66,000 direct jobs and remains one of the country’s biggest beneficiaries of AGOA.
“Beyond apparel, our focus must now be on using this extended window to expand Kenya’s export basket and increase the range and value of products reaching the U.S. market,” he said.
CS Kinyanjui identified value-added agricultural products, leather and leather products, pharmaceuticals and manufactured goods as areas with significant export potential. He said the Government would continue working with exporters and the private sector to increase the utilisation of AGOA and ensure that more Kenyan enterprises and value chains benefit.
“AGOA should therefore serve as a catalyst for Kenya’s industrialisation, value addition, investment and job creation,” the CS said.
